A quaint township on the shore of Lake Stewart, MacTier is a historic railway town.

Have coffee at Chef Henrie cafe or relax on the public beach overlooking Stewart Lake.

MacTier also has an excellent public school, a Foodland and a branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

In the 1900’s The Canadian Pacific Railway built a line from Toronto to Sudbury. MacTier was chosen, due to availability of water from Stewart Lake. A marshalling yard with 16 tracks, a Maintenance shop, Round House with turntable, Car department, coal Chutes, water tower, sand house, ash pit, and stock pens were all built. The Muskoka Station contained a yard office, operator’s board waiting room, freight shed, and a Booster station equipped with Telegraph Service. Up to 8 passenger and 12 Freight trains daily went through Muskoka Station. There was also a C.P.R. Restaurant where passengers and crew members could rest and eat. A C.P.R. Boarding House was built to house train crews & workers. The employees began to build homes and this cluster of homes was first named Muskoka Station. Later it was changed to MacTier after the Assistant Superintendent of the Eastern Division.
